Learn MoreHow Does the Roof Insurance Claim Process Work in St. Louis?
If your roof has been damaged by hail, wind, or another severe weather event, the insurance claim process can seem overwhelming. At St. Louis Roofing & Siding, we help homeowners throughout the St. Louis area understand the process, document storm damage, and work through the roofing portion of their insurance claim.
Although every insurance company and policy is different, a typical roof insurance claim involves five main steps:
- 1Inspect and document the storm damage
- 2File the insurance claim
- 3Meet with the insurance adjuster
- 4Review the insurance scope and address missing items
- 5Complete the roof replacement and submit final documentation
What Can Trigger a Roof Insurance Claim?
Hail and high winds can damage a roofing system even when the damage isn’t obvious from the ground. Before visiting your property, St. Louis Roofing & Siding uses professional storm-tracking technology and meteorological reports to review the storm history at your specific location. This helps us identify when hail, damaging winds, or other significant weather events may have affected your home. We then perform an on-site inspection to determine whether there is evidence of storm-related damage.
Step 1: Inspect and Document the Roof Damage
The first step is determining whether your property actually sustained storm damage. Homeowners may notice:
- Missing, lifted, or creased shingles
- Dented gutters, downspouts, or metal components
- Damaged siding
- Fallen branches or storm debris
- Water intrusion or interior leaks
However, some hail damage cannot be identified from the ground. Hail can damage an asphalt shingle by displacing protective granules or damaging the underlying shingle material. A trained roofing professional can inspect the roof for impact marks, wind damage, and patterns consistent with a recent storm.
Step 2: File the Claim With Your Insurance Company
If the inspection identifies storm damage that may warrant an insurance claim, the next step is notifying your insurance carrier. Your insurance company will typically ask for information such as:
- The approximate date of loss
- The type of storm or event
- The areas of the property that appear damaged
- Your contact information
Once the claim is opened, your insurance company will provide a claim number and usually assign an adjuster.
Don’t Wait Too Long to Report Storm Damage
Insurance policies have requirements regarding when a loss must be reported and when repairs or replacement must be completed. These requirements vary by insurance company and policy. If you suspect storm damage, it is a good idea to review your policy and contact your insurance agent or carrier promptly rather than assuming you have a specific amount of time to file.
Step 3: Meet With the Insurance Adjuster
After the claim is filed, the insurance company will normally schedule an adjuster to inspect the property. The adjuster evaluates the damage and determines what the insurance company believes is covered under the policy. Whenever possible, St. Louis Roofing & Siding can meet the adjuster at your property. Having your roofing contractor present can be helpful because we have already inspected the roof and can show the adjuster the areas where we documented damage. There is no separate charge for us to meet your adjuster. However, because working through an insurance restoration project requires a significant investment of our team’s time and expertise, we ask homeowners who choose us to assist with the process to contract with St. Louis Roofing & Siding for the approved roofing work.
Step 4: Review the Insurance Scope
After the adjuster’s inspection, the insurance company typically prepares an estimate or scope of work. That estimate may include items such as:
- Removal of the existing roofing
- Replacement shingles
- Underlayment
- Ice and water protection where required
- Drip edge
- Ridge cap
- Flashing
- Pipe boots and roof accessories
- Ventilation components
- Disposal and cleanup
Before beginning construction, St. Louis Roofing & Siding performs a detailed review of the insurance scope and compares it with the actual requirements of the roofing project.
What Is an Insurance Supplement?
Sometimes an insurance estimate does not include everything required to properly complete the roofing project. When appropriate, additional documentation can be submitted to the insurance company for consideration. This is commonly referred to as a supplement. Supporting documentation may include:
- Photographs
- Roof measurements
- Manufacturer installation requirements
- Material specifications
- Building-code requirements
- Additional information discovered during construction
The insurance company ultimately determines whether additional items are covered under the homeowner’s policy. Our goal is to make sure the carrier has the information it needs to evaluate the actual scope of the roofing work.
Step 5: Roof Replacement and Final Payment
Once the project is approved and the homeowner is ready to proceed, we schedule the roofing work. How the insurance company issues payment depends largely on the homeowner’s policy.
